Transforming Lives through Sterilization

At K9 Rescue International, we believe the only humane, effective way to reduce stray populations in Ukraine and Eastern Europe is through sterilization. One unspayed dog and her offspring can produce millions of descendants over time – our work stops this cycle of suffering before it begins.

In our Spay-a-Thon in Odesa region in March 2025, we sterilized 298 animals in just 6 days! This included 205 free spays for stray and pet dogs funded by us, K9 Rescue, and 93 additional animals (both cats and dogs) were spayed through Affordable Sterilization’s low-cost program, where guardians pay only the cost of consumables.  This allows pet owners to spay their animals when the full cost – typically 5 times higher – would otherwise be out of their reach. The demand was overwhelming – 500+ pet owners applied for our budget of 205 free sterilization spots, proving that communities want to help yet without access to affordable sterilization unwanted litters will continue to be born into hardship.

Why is this important? The real source of the stray animal crisis isn’t just strays reproducing on the streets – it’s unsterilized pet dogs and cats continuously giving birth. With no adequate shelter system, their offspring almost always end up on the streets. Yet, local governments (if they fund sterilization at all) only focus on strays, leaving pet owners without affordable options. This is why we focus on both.

The cost of our Spay-a-Thon project? $5,025 USD – made possible thanks to the organization Affordable Sterilization, who only charged us for the cost of consumables.

The impact? At least 3,500 puppies saved from being born into suffering in the first year alone, based on an average of six puppies per litter and two litters per year.

By sponsoring a Spay Day, you prevent thousands of animals from being born into hardship. Just $1.44 saves a life from being born into suffering.

Support our next spay day

A donation of $2,500 funds the sterilization work of around 100 animals – to include all necessary veterinary care.

Your sponsorship will directly support our mission to reduce stray animal populations in Ukraine by stopping the cycle of suffering before it begins. Together, we can create a meaningful change — one spay at a time!

Breaking the Cycle of Suffering for Ukraine’s Strays

At K9 Rescue International, we work alongside grassroots rescuers and independent shelters in Ukraine to support street feeding programs for feral dogs and cats. One of our dedicated partners, Elena, has been on the frontlines in Odesa since 2015, feeding, rescuing, and advocating for the most vulnerable animals.

“The suffering of Ukraine’s stray dogs and cats is unimaginable, and local authorities turn a blind eye. Before the war, sterilization programs in cities like Odesa helped control the stray population, but now, funding has vanished. As more animals are abandoned, we’re overwhelmed, unable to help them all. It’s heartbreaking to witness this suffering, knowing it will only worsen without widespread sterilization”
~ Elena, Odesa, Ukraine

The real solution lies in sterilizing both stray and domestic animals. With no adequate shelter system, unwanted litters from unspayed pets almost always end up on the streets, fuelling the stray crisis, yet affordable spay/neuter options are scarce. Without action, the cycle of puppies and kittens being born into suffering continues.

By supporting humane sterilization and feeding programs, you can help break this cycle. Together, we can end the suffering and create lasting change.
