Heartbreak at the bombed shelter

In May we visited a shelter on the outskirts of Kyiv called the Best of Friends Shelter, this shelter was situated inside of 1k of the front line trenches and was the scene of some of the most horrific actions that I have seen so far.

It was bombed 5 times. Although the first couple of times were ‘indiscriminate’ hits the rest were targeted and that is something that I cannot get my head around – why would you want to target an animal shelter?

During the bombing, the shelter owners let out as many of the animals as they could but ultimately they lost 500 dogs and 300 cats, it’s heartbreaking.

Now they are rebuilding. Again.

Just behind the shelter, there was a huge crater where a bomb had been dropped, there is a hole in the ground and all the trees are splintered – this was only 40’ from the shelter.

Thank God it didn’t hit it.

Walking around the shelter there are sad relics to be seen, jaw bones etc. But we now have to focus on the animals that did make it.

So we did, we delivered about 2-3 tonnes of food and helped as much as we could in the time that we had – we are going back in June to do some more.

I met 3 beautiful cats that hid under their shelter, there were 3 horse and 2 foxes also that made it plus a very rare racoon dog.

But they need more help.

Please help us to help them.

EVERY MOMENT COUNTS

Eastern Europe need our help, the amount of animals in need of care is growing exponentially and things need to change – and we have a plan.

Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver.

We want to change the way animals are sheltered and transported across Europe, and this is not an insurmountable task, it just needs dedication – and that dedication is something we all can do at some level.

We have designed a radical new style of animal sanctuary, with the inclusion of an existing method of ‘bio-security’ but now applied to ‘companion animals’.

If we can build the first one in Ukraine then we can build them across Europe – we can be the change – all of us.

You can help, please donate what you can and/or spread the word – if we can get this message out to everyone, then we can do this – we can be the change.

Please see our Freedom Shelter Campaign for more information.
