Billy’s story is one of heartbreak, resilience, and unexpected love.

Vladimir, a Ukrainian soldier, spent two years fighting in the war in Ukraine before being discharged due to severe injuries, leaving him unable to return to active duty. Yet his personal battle was far from over. Devastated by the loss of his beloved dog, Jack, who escaped his yard and ran off during shelling in Odesa, Vladimir has searched tirelessly, hoping for a miracle.

During his search, he received a call from someone who had seen one of his missing dog posters. A dog was lying motionless in their garden – was it Jack? Rushing to the scene, Vladimir found a dog, but not his own. This was Billy, injured and unable to move. Without hesitation, Vladimir carried him to the car and rushed him to the vet.

Billy had been hit by a car. X-rays revealed a devastating injury:

• First Break: A severe fracture near the hip joint, where the femur has split into two pieces with a gap between them.

• Second Break: A second fracture further down the femur, leaving a floating middle bone fragment.

This kind of injury—a segmental fracture—is complex and difficult to repair. The vet recommended two surgeries:

✅ First surgery: Plating the fracture near the hip joint, which was done immediately.
🔜 Second surgery (urgent): A second plate to stabilize the remaining break.

Vladimir has no income and was desperate to help Billy yet had no means to pay for the surgery. He reached out to us through our partners, to ask for our help.

The first surgery cost $300 plus additional costs of medicines and post-op care supplies.

His second surgery will likely cost the same so we urgently need to raise $600 to cover his first surgery bill and to be able to schedule his second surgery so he can have a real chance at recovery.

But Billy’s story doesn’t end there.

As Vladimir has cared for Billy during his recovery, an unbreakable bond has formed between them. Though he still hopes for the miracle of finding Jack, he has made a heartfelt decision—Billy now has a home with him, forever.
