Billy’s story is one of heartbreak, resilience, and unexpected love.

Vladimir, a Ukrainian soldier, spent two years fighting in the war in Ukraine before being discharged due to severe injuries, leaving him unable to return to active duty. Yet his personal battle was far from over. Devastated by the loss of his beloved dog, Jack, who escaped his yard and ran off during shelling in Odesa, Vladimir has searched tirelessly, hoping for a miracle.

During his search, he received a call from someone who had seen one of his missing dog posters. A dog was lying motionless in their garden – was it Jack? Rushing to the scene, Vladimir found a dog, but not his own. This was Billy, injured and unable to move. Without hesitation, Vladimir carried him to the car and rushed him to the vet.

Billy had been hit by a car. X-rays revealed a devastating injury:

• First Break: A severe fracture near the hip joint, where the femur has split into two pieces with a gap between them.

• Second Break: A second fracture further down the femur, leaving a floating middle bone fragment.

This severity of this injury – a segmental fracture – is complex and difficult to repair, and required two complex surgeries, with a long recovery ahead. Vladimir, despite having no income, wanted nothing more than to help Billy recover and live a full life, yet had no means to pay for the surgery. He reached out to us through our partners, to ask for our help.

The Road to Recovery

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our sponsors and the support of our community, Billy immediately underwent his first surgery to repair the fracture near his hip. Following that, he needed a second surgery to stabilize the second fracture, and on April 29th, Billy underwent his second surgery.

The good news is that Billy is recovering well! He has made significant progress, and he’s now expected to make a full recovery. His strength, resilience, and the love he’s received have made all the difference.

But Billy’s story doesn’t end there

During his recovery, an unbreakable bond formed between Vladimir and Billy. Despite still hoping for a miracle to find Jack, Vladimir has made the heartfelt decision to keep Billy. Billy is now part of his family, and the two share a special connection built on trust, care, and a journey of healing.

Billy’s second chance at life wouldn’t have been possible without the compassion of those who supported him. Vladimir’s love for Billy, combined with the kindness of those who helped fund his surgeries, has given this brave dog a chance to walk normally again, to live a life full of joy and love.

A Bright Future Ahead

Billy’s story is not just one of survival but of transformation. His injuries were severe, and his journey was filled with uncertainty, but thanks to the support he received, Billy is now on the path to a full recovery.
