Rescued from a lifetime of abuse

Nelson weighs just 7 kilograms – the size of a small house dog who should have been curled up safely on someone’s sofa.

Instead, he was found wandering alone in a vast open field, more than 12 kilometres from the nearest house.

When our volunteer saw him, something was immediately wrong. The tiny dog was moving slowly and uncertainly, clearly in pain and badly disoriented. As she got closer, the devastating reason became clear.

One of Nelson’s eyes had been completely destroyed by blunt force trauma.

There was no possibility of saving it.

A Life Marked by Cruelty

At the veterinary clinic, the full extent of Nelson’s suffering began to emerge.

X-rays revealed old rib fractures – injuries that had healed long ago but told a terrible story. These were not accidental injuries. They were the signs of a dog who had lived with cruel and violent people.

The vet believes Nelson likely had some vision in his remaining eye before the most recent trauma. But after years of abuse, something happened that left him almost blind.

And then, when he was no longer “useful” to his owners, they simply threw him away.

Our volunteer later said:

“A beaten, blind, and sick little dog – likely abused for years, then dumped because someone decided he wasn’t worth keeping. Sadly, we see this far too often in rural areas: dogs discarded as if they were trash. We face this again and again…”

The injury to his eye was already about a week old when he was found. By then, Nelson was dehydrated, starving, and desperately vulnerable.

Emergency Surgery

The damaged eye had to be surgically removed.

Nelson is now recovering from the procedure. His stitches will be removed once the wound has healed, and he continues to receive medication and monitoring from the veterinary team.

His remaining eye is inflamed and swollen, and vets are doing everything possible to treat the infection and protect the delicate tissue.

Even though Nelson is likely blind, this treatment remains essential for his comfort and long-term health.

A Beautiful Turn in Nelson’s Story

After everything he has endured, there is finally a moment of hope.

A wonderful family in Germany has come forward to adopt Nelson. They already have experience caring for blind dogs and understand exactly what he needs – patience, kindness, and a safe home where he will never be hurt again.

Once his stitches are removed and he has recovered from surgery, Nelson will travel to his new home at the end of April.

For the first time in his life, he will know what it means to be loved.

Nelson’s Gentle Spirit

Despite everything that has happened to him – the beatings, the abandonment, the fear – Nelson remains incredibly gentle and trusting.

He allows people to handle him. He leans into soft voices and careful hands. Even now, he still believes that humans can be kind.
