Humane Stray Animal Population Management Project

At K9 Rescue International, we recognize that the solution to reducing the number of stray dogs and cats in Eastern Europe and Ukraine is through compassionate, sustainable solutions. Studies confirm that humane sterilization is the only effective method for controlling stray populations, and K9 Rescue International is committed to implementing this approach in partnership with local communities.

Through sterilization projects, we aim to prevent millions of animals from being born into a life of hardship and suffering on the streets. Using the spay/neuter calculation model, just one unspayed dog or cat and their offspring could potentially produce a staggering 11 million descendants over their lifetime. Our sterilization projects can help to substantially reduce the exponential growth of stray populations, ultimately alleviating the social impact that arises from overpopulation.

Our Impact and Approach: Our recent sterilization campaigns in Ukraine have been a tremendous success, achieving an average of 100 sterilizations per day. These projects target both feral animals through trap-neuter-return initiatives and animals from domestic households, where unplanned litters often contribute directly to the stray population. During our most recent project for domestic animals, low cost spay-neuter was offered to all residents in the community, and we funded free sterilizations for animals from low-income households.  We believe this dual approach of targeting both feral and domestic animals not only improves animal welfare yet also contributes to community health and environmental sustainability – for every procedure, we are one step closer to creating safer, healthier communities.

How You Can Support This Mission: Your partnership could help us achieve our goal of sterilizing hundreds more stray animals, one campaign at a time.

A donation of $2,500 funds an entire day’s sterilization work of around 100 animals per day – to include all necessary veterinary care and post-op services. Larger contributions help us secure critical resources to support high-volume sterilization efforts and extend our impact.

Join us in our mission to reduce stray animal suffering in Ukraine. Together, we can create a meaningful change — one spay at a time!

K9 Rescue International works with independent rescuers and grass roots shelters in Ukraine, helping to fund the street feeding stations for the feral dog and cat populations.   One of our dedicated partners, Elena, has been feeding and also rescuing stray dogs and cats from the streets in and around Odesa since 2015

“The situation for feral dogs and cats in Ukraine is horrific – the suffering they endure daily is unbearable, and local authorities show no interest in finding humane solutions. Before the war, programs in cities like Odesa helped manage stray populations by providing sterilizations for homeless animals, but with the war, funding has vanished. As the number of abandoned animals surges, volunteers like us struggle to keep up. We are often forced to turn animals away simply because we lack the resources to feed and care for them, and it’s heart-breaking to witness this level of suffering and feel powerless to change it. Without humane sterilization efforts, the cycle of abandonment and suffering will only worsen.”

~ Elena, Odesa, Ukraine

We firmly believe that sterilisation of both the feral populations together with the domestic animals is an effective strategy to both end the suffering of feral and abandoned animals, as well as prevent further unwanted litters from being put to the streets born to domestic animals.  Please help us to make this a reality.
